Book Review #97: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling

I rate this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.

(Finished Reading: 16/08/16
My 12th book this year.)

This book is all about the next generation. Harry and Ginny have children, as do Ron and Hermione.

Albus feels the social pressure of being Harry Potter’s son, made worse by being a friend of Scorpius (Draco Malfoy’s son. Rumour has it Scorpius is actually Voldemort’s son).

Boys being boys find a mission to accomplish involving a time turning device. As they travel back in time, they realise every change makes a drastic change to the present day. They now need to figure what to do to fix one of these dire outcomes.

I would have much preferred this story to be laid out in the usual novel style.

I loved the idea of time turning because as the reader we can explore the different outcomes of the story. It was great because Rowling managed to fill in the gaps and everything fit together for me.

However having being written for the stage, this story felt extremely stripped of detail and depth. I would probably prefer to watch this production on stage rather than to read it. That is why I only gave 3.5 for this story.

I found the relationship struggle between Harry and Albus to be uncomfortable yet it makes sense why this was the best ending for the story.
The relationship between Scorpius and Albus touched my heart.

I would recommend this book to all Harry Potter fans only because we should all know the ending. But I wouldn’t recommend it with the usual enthusiasm I would give for most other books.
