Book Review #31: The Pleasures of Winter By Evie Hunter

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

(Finished Reading on 29/08/13
My 30th book this year.)

This book is based on a journalist, Abbie Marshall and a famous actor Jack Winter.

Winter has a beautiful face and a body to die for but he has an immensely dark side that allows him to completely lose his self control.

Abbie is thrown into the deep end when she crashes Winter’s private flight for an interview. With her feisty attitude and confident manner she manages to spark his interest.

With much action, drama and sex based on pleasure and pain, Abbie explores her dark side with an all too willing Mr Winter.

I enjoyed this book but the opening chapters were a little too over dramatic and not believable enough. I like reading books where I can imagine everything happening but the whole Honduras episode was over the top due to the near death encounters and the “hero saves the day” scenes.

The intimate scenes were well written, the storyline was ok. But all in all I enjoyed this book so my rating is 4 star. I look forward to reading a sequel but the book didn’t leave me wanting more so I guess it will be a while before I read the next book.

Book Review #30: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

(Finished reading on 27/08/13
My 29th book this year.)

This story is about a teenage girl, Lucy, who is on an adventure to find a mysterious graffiti artist, Shadow. With 2 of her friends and a few other lads who say they ‘know’ Shadow, the group of 6 spend all evening telling Shadow’s story.

The boys have a secret mission that they need to attend to, meaning they need to find a way to get away from the girls. Yet at the same time they have each chosen a girl who they want to spend at least another tomorrow with.

I feel disappointed because I loved the storyline for this book. I love the mysterious character of Shadow then when the truth hits Lucy, it just didn’t work for me. There wasn’t enough excitement or adventure for me. I feel like this book is definitely written for a much younger aundience.

Book Review #29: Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec

I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

(Finished Reading 14/08/13
My 28th book this year.)

This book is about a woman called Claire who lost her virginity on a one night stand, leaving her with child. The father, Carter, has no idea until years later when the two accidentally meet and finally realise what part they play in one another’s lives.

In between the commotion, Claire’s best friend, Liz, opens a new business selling adult playthings. More importantly she has made sure there’s enough space in her shop for Claire to set up a chocolate business.

Claire juggles a new business, her new found man and her foul mouthed son, Gavin. This is her chance for a happily ever after.

I only gave this book a 3 star rating because I don’t agree with unnecessary swear words whilst I read. Gavin has such an attitude and is so foul mouthed, I couldn’t connect with the character. But although soppy and hard to believe, I still loved the storyline.

Fallen: Story Extract

“Battling to block out the incessant cries, sporting hooligans howling through the speakers and the bickering. My need for quiet time has long ago passed. I sit here with tears full to the brim, concentrating with all the energy I have left to stop them from spilling over. Mentally trying to keep from losing control, I count, I recite my peaceful mantra, I breathe in and out slowly. Then the screaming and whining breaks through my last barrier and all hell breaks loose.

Shrieking whirlwinds whip around me, blurring my vision until the tears mingle with my burning eyes. Despair and hatred fuse together fighting to control my life. I’m slipping deeper and deeper into the recesses of darkness and I don’t think anyone is around to hear my pleas. Crumbling into a heap on the floor, tears pour through me from the depths of my heart.

I’m not even sure if it’s the stress, or the sadness, or regret, or defeat that has finally brought me down. I don’t think I have the strength to pick myself up to try again. Every step and every turn comes with more destruction and pain for me to endure. I’m not sure this torture is worth it if my life is made up of such bad times. I just want a moment of peace and a reminder of why I should bother trying to stand tall once again…”

Everyone looks at my exterior and no one can see past the smile etched so painfully across my face. When a tear threatens to fall, I laugh out loud and wish I could as easily wipe away my sorrows.

Hazy Reality: Story Extract

“A rush of warmth flushes across my cheeks as your image flickers through my mind. In a hazy blur of black, white and colour; a mixture of reality and a dream, you give me one of your rare but heart melting smiles. I love how one corner of your mouth always lifts higher just as you discreetly wink at me past all the oblivious others.

It doesn’t matter that you have gone from my reality because I see you by my side at every turn. I hear the song that reminds me of you, I feel your touch when you used to hold my hand. I smile as I imagine what you are doing. I close my eyes to a whole different life, where you and I belong together as one.

When I sing and dance to my favourite songs, you mouth the lyrics and tap your foot along with my tunes. When I cruise around the dark winding roads you used to drive through, I feel the rush, my heart flutters just like it did every time I saw your face.

So here I am, laying alone in the darkness, with a smile across my face. No matter how difficult my reality is, I look forward to my beautiful nights filled with happiness, laughter and most important of all, love.”

Inspired by someone important in my life. Even though out of reach and out of my life, there’s still a way to be with your loved ones if only you open your mind and follow where your heart wants to lead you.

I hope you all find something to smile about 🙂 Thank you for reading. Apologies for my super short extracts. I am trying to work out how to gain some quiet time to concentrate and to dive into making my dream come true.
